The ELPAC Report June 2002

Letters to the Editor

I hope you remember me us from the time you worked here in Colorado! We think you've done a great job...I have written a letter to the nebulous Orrin Hatch re: his multilingual b.s.

- F.M., Colorado

I feel that we, as U.S. Citizens, must make or do something more drastic fo English to become our official language.

I have written Representative Foley of Florida with the idea that this be on our National Ballot in 2004.

You know, Mr. Workings, if I had just one or two interested people in my area and a petition stating that official language was our wish, I would so willingly go from door to door. Unlikely as this seems, there are those of us who would give of their time. You think this is improbable? I think not. There are those of us like myself who know how important English will be in our future.

- S.B., Florida

Ed. note:
I do indeed believe that this writer and thousands of others would join in a petition campaign. Having been involved in citizen petition campaigns in many states, I know the power of this kind of activism.
Knowing the success of the statewide campaigns, it occurred to us a long time ago to conduct some sort of national petition drive. While about half the states have provisions for a statewide citizen initiatve, there is no national citizen initiative provision for a national ballot.
