Republicans Bonding The Washington Post reported on June 9 that some Republicans think they have found a way to "bond" with Latino voters. 20 Republican lawmakers and 50 of their aides have taken up Spanish, taught by the Department of Agriculture's graduate school. Rep. Gerald Weller (R-IL) organized the two-hour sessions during 10 legislative weeks. Rep. Weller is quoted by the Post that "...the launch of Spanish on the Hill shows we are serious about working with Spanish-speaking America." House Democratic Caucus Chairman Robert Menendez (D-NJ) panned the effort: "Instead of learning Spanish, Republicans must understand the priorities of Hispanic families." Steve Workings, ELPAC's Executive Director wondered "Whose interests are really being served here? Those of Spanish-speaking constituents or those of misguided politicans who think this will help get them re-elected?" |
