People Worldwide Agree: The Pew Research Center, commonly associated with liberal causes, recently conducted a survey of attitudes around the world on many subjects, one of which was the importance of English in modern life. The Pew Global Attitudes survey found that <169>there is global agreement on the importance of children learning English. Solid majorities in every country surveyed believe that 'children need to learn English to succeed in the world today.' . . . Generally, even those people who say they dislike American culture, or say they are concerned about the future of their own culture, believe it is necessary for children to learn English.<170> The Pew description of <169>solid majorities<170> greatly understates the actual findings in favor of English. For example, 98% of Vietnamese, 96% of Indonesians, 95% of Germans, 93% of Indians and 92% of Chinese strongly agree that learning English is essential. Two-thirds or more of respondents in virtually every country supported English; Jordan was the only exception, where 35% disagreed with the idea that children need to learn English.
