Hall Joins GOP
Friend of English Switches Party

Cong. Ralph Hall, who won re-election to Congress 12 times as a Democrat, filed for re- election January 2, 2004 as a Republican. Hall, who is the oldest member of the House of Representatives, had been a stalwart friend of the English language. He is a co-sponsor of two of the three main English-protection bills currently pending in the House.

Hall said he had contemplated switching parties for about four years. Democrats immediately complained that he switched for political survival in a district which was trending Republican, but under the new Texas election map, Hall will compete in a new election district where many voters had elected Democratic Cong. Max Sandlin.

Hall was expected to handily win the Republican primary in the new district.
