FL Students Protest English Test Nearly 14,000 Florida high school seniors haven't been able to pass comprehensive tests, and so won't be able to graduate on time. Many of the seniors complain that the exams are unfair because they are in English. "Imagine here, where we are a Hispanic-based society, a lot of these students out here protesting they don't know English," Gertter Martin, who twice failed the test, told television station WPLG. "I want to be a doctor and because of [the test] I can't do it," said Jessica Duran. Miami school officials are sympathetic. Gus Barrera said, "How can you tell somebody who's been in school for 12 years . . . that they can't get their diploma?" Florida law, like most other states which offer bilingual education programs, says that the purpose of the program is to teach English. If students have been in Florida schools for 12 years and haven't learned basic English, perhaps it's time for Florida to reform its bilingual education, not its tests. |
