The ELPAC Report July 2004

What's At Stake?
Why We Support Pro-English Candidates

Cong. Steve King (R-Iowa) is one of the most active proponents for official English now in Congress. He recently wrote a letter to ELPAC Executive Director Steve Workings:

"I would like to thank you for your continuous effort to advance official English legislation by helping official English proponents get elected into Congress. . . .I introduced H.R. 997, 'The English Language Unity Act,' earlier this year. H.R. 996 now has over 100 co-sponsors and has garnered the support of members of Congress in more than three-fifths of the states."

Cong. King's son Jeff has been quite active in supporting official English legislation. He also talked to Workings:

"As you know, Iowa is a possible swing state for the President, and although Bush hasn't been an ally of official English supporters, I believe he will be better than the alternative. King for Congress will work hard in our district and state to make sure official English candidates get elected at both the state and federal level.

"Cong. King has gained strong grassroots support across Iowa for his stances on issues like official English and immigration. We are in a position to help other like-minded candidates get elected. We will make official English an issue in the coming session of Congress."

ELPAC has strongly endorsed Cong. King's re-election and provided him with the maximum financial support permitted by law.
