Pro-Statehood Puerto Rico Governor Forced to Testify at Corruption Trial Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Rossello, leader of the multi-million dollar push to make Puerto Rico the fifty-first State, was forced to take the stand and testify in federal court in San Juan in late May. Rossello had reportedly received hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal campaign contributions from funds which should have been used to for public health services. Although he denied the allegations of payoffs, embezzlement and corruption, with his appearance, Rossello became the first sitting Governor to testify at a criminal trial in Puerto Rico. This is not the first corruption accusation against Rossello. During last year's fight over statehood, Rossello reportedly diverted millions of dollars of hurricane relief aid to his statehood push. |
