The ELPAC Report June 1999

News Flash: Puerto Rico Governor Changing Jobs

On June 2nd as this issue of The ELPAC Report was going to press, Governor Pedro Rosello announced that he would not run for re-election. Many observers, including the Associated Press, said that his withdrawal was caused by the second defeat of his statehood legislation last year (ELPAC opposed the Puerto Rican statehood legislation).

So will Rosello's withdrawal mean the end of Puerto Rican statehood efforts? No. Rosello is joining the Al Gore for President campaign as one of its co-chairman and will become a national figure in battles to woo hispanic voters to both parties. His price may be renewed consideration for Puerto Rican statehood.
