The ELPAC Report June 1999

Letters

Editor's note: This was one of hundreds of letters ELPAC supporters recently sent to Rep. Tom DeLay, Majority Whip of the House of Representatives:

Dear Mr. DeLay:
It is quite a mystery to me why so many people do not realize that a common language is largely responsible for keeping this country together, in contrast to the constant fighting and bickering which characterized the Balkan states for so many centuries.
If Puerto Rico is permitted to join without learning the common language, we are in danger of the same possibilities, divisiveness and even warfare eventually!
- F.F., California

I couldn't agree with you more that saving our common language, English, is of the greatest importance to the failure of our nation. Our common language is unquestionably the glue that has held our nation together and to rise as the most successful nation on the globe.
- J.J., Missouri

I have been supporting official English for years. Nothing changes!
- A.C., Wisconsin

Editor's reply:
Look at where we began and where we are now.
When ELPAC started, federal laws were being passed right & left to give new language rights, bilingual education was expanding, bilingual ballots were being required in more and more jurisdictions, government was enforcing rules against English on the job policies, and much much more. When we started it was considered unncessary or even racist to talk about protecting English. Now people understand and are working with us to protect English. But as you can see in these pages the fight goes on. We have stood guard for 15 years and will continue to do so
