Hispanic Legislators Scramble to Learn Spanish

It's not only kids who need to learn other languages. In May, the Associated Press reported that many of the 26 Hispanics in the California Legislature don't speak Spanish. Faced with an increase in Hispanic voters, most are scrambling to learn Spanish. Many legislators, including Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante and some non-Hispanics, are taking intensive Spanish classes at the Centro Bilingue in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Marcelo Gaete, spokesman for the National Association of Latino Elected Officials in Los Angeles, noted "Elected officials know that speaking a group's native language helps garner their support. Latino legislators are no different, except that some of them may feel self- conscious about not knowing how to speak Spanish."
