Puerto Rican Statehood Looks Dead For many years, the government of Puerto Rico was dominated by the Statehood party, which wanted to make the island into the 51st State. ELPAC opposed statehood for Puerto Rico because of the many questions surrounding the effect on our common English language. Last November the pro-statehood forces lost control of the Puerto Rican government. Now that the Bush Administration has settled the contentious issue of military training on the island of Vieques, the statehood question seems to have lost its punch in Washington. No legislation has been introduced this year to make Puerto Rico a state. |
